Shenzhen-based electric-car maker BYD has opened a megawatt-class flash-charging station in Hong Kong, in a government car park at Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park in Sai Ying Pun. It comes as the government pushes for far more fast chargers.

BYD [said in a press release reported by unwire.hk](https://unwire.hk/2026/10/30/byd-megawatt-flash-charging/life-tech/auto/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) that the station opened on Oct. 30 with two European-standard charging guns, each rated at up to 1,500 kilowatts. BYD called it the city's first megawatt flash-charging site in a government car park. [BYD](https://www.byd.com/en?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) built it with Hong Kong EV Power (香港電動能源有限公司) and iCar Group (愛車集團), its partner in a Hong Kong flash-charging joint venture.

The quoted top speeds, such as 10% to 97% in nine minutes, apply only to cars built for flash charging and under suitable conditions, unwire.hk reported. The models on sale in Hong Kong known so far to support it are the Z9 GT and D9 Duo from BYD's Denza brand and other cars with BYD's second-generation Blade battery, it said.

Carmakers are building their own sites. BYD opened an earlier flash-charging station, at the Gold Coast mall in Tuen Mun, on Sept. 17\. BYD says it plans about 100 flash-charging stations in Hong Kong by the end of 2027\. Chinese EV maker [XPeng](https://www.heyxpeng.com/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) and local charging operator Halo opened a 1-megawatt station for all brands in September, which XPeng called the city's first publicly accessible one, [CnEVPost reported](https://cnevpost.com/2026/09/16/xpeng-megawatt-charging-station-live-hk/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io). At the time, XPeng had yet to launch a model that can take a megawatt charge, CnEVPost said.

BYD also holds a separate site: in July its Hong Kong unit won a government tender for a 12-year land grant on Hiu Kwong Street in Kwun Tong, Kowloon, set aside for an EV charging station, paying HK$12 million, a [Lands Department](https://www.landsd.gov.hk/en/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) (地政總署) [notice](https://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/202607/27/P2026072700740.htm?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) said.

Seventy-two of Hong Kong's 16,435 public chargers were rated at 100 kilowatts or more at the end of 2025, up from 9 a year earlier, the [Environment and Ecology Bureau](https://www.eeb.gov.hk/en/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) (環境及生態局) said in an [Oct. 28 written reply](https://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/202610/28/P2026102800314.htm?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) to lawmakers. The government targets 5,000 fast chargers within five years and a first batch of megawatt flash-charging projects within 2027\. It says one megawatt charger can support more than 100 EVs.
