Shenzhen lidar maker RoboSense (速腾聚创) has started a production line in the city's Nanshan area designed to turn out 500,000 lidars per year. It says final assembly on the line needs only six workers. The line came into use on Nov. 4 with an overall automation rate of 99%, RoboSense said, according to 21st Century Business Herald (21世纪经济报道). It is part of RoboSense's plan for 4 million units of annual capacity. The Hong Kong-listed company sold about 1.3 million lidars across all its customers in the first nine months of 2026.

More than 100 automated machines carry out more than 70 steps, from final assembly through calibration, testing and packing, the company says. RoboSense says its MARS manufacturing base now has more than 22 automated lines.

The line sits in a Nanshan industrial park that is a demonstration project for what China calls "industrial upstairs" (工业上楼), factories on the upper floors of tall buildings. At the park, spiral ramps and raised loading decks let trucks drive straight to the equipment entrance on the line's floor, [the paper reported](https://m.21jingji.com/article/20261105/herald/3f02fc72d29c807ec4f2696034a3a0cb.html?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io).

RoboSense hasn't said which customers the line will serve. Cars still take most of its lidars. In an [Oct. 9 filing](https://www1.hkexnews.hk/listedco/listconews/sehk/2026/1009/2026100900005.pdf?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io), it reported selling about 887,000 units for driver-assistance systems in the first nine months, against about 427,800 for robotics and other uses. That puts robotics and other uses at about a third of its units, by our calculation from the filing, which [we covered in October](https://asia-tech-news.ghost.io/robosenses-2026-lidar-unit-sales-already-top-last-years/). Besides cars, [RoboSense](https://www.robosense.ai/en?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io)'s lidars go into robotaxis, robot lawn mowers, unmanned delivery vehicles and commercial cleaning robots, the paper said.

The new capacity comes as price competition among lidar makers continues, the paper wrote. As car lidar prices keep falling and robot demand broadens, manufacturing at scale is becoming a new barrier between rivals, it said. Whether RoboSense turns its plan for 4 million units of capacity into deliveries depends on how fast the robot market grows, it added.
