# Taiwan firms' plants in China make Beijing's proposed smart-factory list

At least seven of the factories China wants to hold up [as national models of automation](https://asia-tech-news.ghost.io/china-proposes-253-more-model-smart-factories-and-industrial-sites/) belong to Taiwanese tech groups, including New Taipei City-based [Hon Hai Precision Industry](https://www.foxconn.com/en-us?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) (Foxconn, 鴻海) and Taoyuan-based [Quanta Computer](https://www.quantatw.com/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) (廣達電腦). 

China's [Ministry of Industry and Information Technology](https://www.miit.gov.cn/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) (MIIT, 工业和信息化部) named them among 253 projects on its [proposed list](https://wap.miit.gov.cn/cms%5Ffiles/filemanager/1226211233/attach/202610/d22052f239834156b969cbf94517e0c4.pdf?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) of "excellence-level" smart factories, the third of four tiers in [its ratings of Chinese plants](https://asia-tech-news.ghost.io/china-proposes-253-more-model-smart-factories-oilfields-included/). The list was [posted Oct. 19](https://wap.miit.gov.cn/zwgk/wjgs/art/2026/art%5F7470f4a0fd8c4b64ad0e23590f50715c.html?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io), with objections taken through Oct. 26.

The project titles say what each plant makes:

- [AUO](https://auo.com/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) (友達光電), based in Hsinchu, Taiwan: display modules in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, at its Suzhou subsidiary (友达光电（苏州）).
- [E Ink](https://www.eink.com/?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io) (元太科技), based in Hsinchu: [color e-paper](https://asia-tech-news.ghost.io/e-inks-newest-color-e-paper-debuts-in-a-chinese-work-notebook/) displays in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, at its Yangzhou subsidiary (川奇光电科技（扬州）).

AUO, E Ink, UMC, Quanta and MSI each own 100% of their unit through other group companies, according to their latest financial reports ([AUO](https://auo.com/upload/media/ir/Financial%5FInformation/2Q2026%5FTC.pdf?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io), [E Ink](https://tw.eink.com/investor/7826051408aj793263/2026%E5%B9%B4%E7%AC%AC%E4%B8%80%E5%AD%A3IFRSs%E5%90%88%E4%BD%B5%E8%B2%A1%E5%A0%B1?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io), [UMC](https://doc.twse.com.tw/pdf/202602%5F2303%5FAI1%5F20261020%5F174731.pdf?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io)). Hon Hai's report and a Tripod filing call their units subsidiaries.

Several PRC plants are central to their Taiwan parent companies. Hon Hai's Zhengzhou unit sold NT$815.9 billion (about US$25 billion) of goods to another Hon Hai company in the first half of 2026, equal to 18% of Hon Hai's revenue in that period, [its report says](https://doc.twse.com.tw/pdf/202602%5F2317%5FAI1%5F20261020%5F174726.pdf?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io). In the same six months, Quanta itself, not counting its subsidiaries, bought about a fifth of its goods, NT$276.4 billion (about US$8.5 billion), from the Chongqing plant, which made almost all its sales to Quanta, [its report shows](https://doc.twse.com.tw/pdf/202602%5F2382%5FAI1%5F20261020%5F174727.pdf?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io). MSI itself bought 57% of its goods in that period, NT$40.3 billion (about US$1.2 billion), from its Shenzhen plant, [its report shows](https://doc.twse.com.tw/pdf/202602%5F2377%5FAI1%5F20261020%5F175622.pdf?ref=asia-tech-news.ghost.io).
