BYD looks to long-haul electric trucks for growth abroad
Its 150,000th commercial vehicle was a long-haul electric heavy truck, and BYD is pitching trucks abroad as part of a zero-carbon logistics package.
BYD, the world’s biggest electric-car maker, is putting next-generation heavy trucks at the center of its commercial-vehicle push, with export markets as the target. Its 150,000th electric or hybrid bus or truck, which rolled out in Huai’an, Jiangsu province, on Oct. 9, was a battery-electric Q3 built for long-haul freight. Chinese tech news site Leiphone calls that a signal that BYD’s growth is tilting toward trucks.
BYD built its commercial-vehicle business on city buses, but buses made up fewer than one in ten of the 53,032 commercial vehicles it sold from January through September, according to its monthly sales figures.
The Q3’s range is 215 to 450 km on BYD’s own test cycle, with 10% of the charge held in reserve, according to its product page.
BYD’s commercial vehicles are sold in more than 70 countries and regions, Leiphone reports, and trucks are becoming a key part of its overseas push. At a 2026 truck show in Hanover, Germany, BYD offered trucks, charging networks, fleet management and lifetime maintenance as one zero-carbon logistics package.
BYD started out making batteries for phones. It passed Tesla in 2025 as the world’s biggest seller of battery-electric cars, with 2.26 million sold, and remains the No. 2 maker of electric-vehicle batteries after CATL, according to SNE Research.
